Who We Are

The GI Rights Hotline (800) 394-9544: Information on military discharges, grievance and complaint procedures and other civil rights from a network of nonprofit, nongovernmental organizations.
Navigation bar: See text links below

The GI Rights Hotline is answered by a coalition of nonprofit, non-governmental organizations who provide information to members of the military about discharges, grievance and complaint procedures, and other civil rights.

Before you contact us, it is important to review the information we provide on this website. If you are seeking a discharge, please read Getting Out and note the discharges you think may apply to you before calling. If you are AWOL or UA, click here. If you are in the Delayed Entry Program, please read our fact sheet on the DEP and draft a letter requesting a separation from the program before calling.

The GI Rights Hotline is a volunteer-based organization. We do not have the resources to staff a live 24 hour hotline. When you call, you will likely have to leave a message and someone from one of the organizations in the GI Rights Network will call you back, usually within 5 business days. (If you are outside the US, you can call (510) 465-1472.) If you do not hear back from us in 7 days, please call again.

If you do not feel comfortable leaving a message, or have no phone number where you can be called back, please email us. If you email from a military base, please be aware that your email may be monitored by your command. Your military email address may be particularly vulnerable to this. You may want to open a free private email address. (See the Yahoo directory for companies that offer free email.)

When emailing, let us know the service you are in, if you are active duty, DEP or reserves, the date you entered active duty, and a description of your situation.

We do not handle discharge upgrading cases. For information on discharge upgrading, visit the National Veterans Legal Services Program site at www.nvlsp.org.
