YOUR PRODUCT IS DEFECTIVE

by Steve Morse

I don’t want no more of your War Machine
Your drill sergeants are so damned mean,
I joined up to try to get my life back on track.
Your recruiter’s pitch, it was so slick
Now it just makes me sick
Your product is defective – I want my life back.

For a Few Good Men, it’s an Adventure at sea.
They’re an Army of One, they’re All They Can Be
If you believe in the Tooth Fairy and advertising hype
Now it’s “Hurry up and wait”, “You’re just a piece of meat”
You’re trying to kill my soul, I’ve got blisters on my feet
I can’t stand this harassment, though I’m not usually one to gripe.

To train us, you use the finest men
Who repeat their cliches again and again.
They turn us against each other, it’s us they attack.
Now I don’t want to hear another joke about feces,
And I don’t want to kill my own species
You’re product is defective – I want my conscience back.

The enlisted man rides on the caboose,
While the enlisted woman gets rape and abuse
“If you don’t want trouble, you’d better join me in the sack.”
Ah, but the command is concerned, they sure get pissed
They occasionally mete out a slap on the wrist!
Your product is defective – I want my dignity back.

Back during the war in Vietnam
Military morale, it wasn’t so calm
GI’s began to talk, to question and to think
There were mutinies on ships and on the ground
And some turned the guns around
Your rotting carcass, you couldn’t hide the stink

I never thought it would be so hard
When I joined up with the National Guard
I’d make the meetings, help out with a flood
Now buddies are dead over here in Iraq
This Occupation is a total crock.
And my memory of that young girl, the sand and the blood.

We’re sitting ducks, we’re the hunted
Because we’re part of an Army that isn’t wanted
People do rise up when shove comes to push.
I look to the day we draw the curtains
On the war profiteers, the Halliburtons
When the game’s up for Cheney, Osama and Bush

So transfer me to Ft. Livingroom
So I can shed this cloak of gloom
Be with loved ones, get a job, and get my life back on track
Your recruiter’s lies, they were so thick
Now they just make me sick
Your product is defective – I want my life back.
