JULIA BEATRIZ MORENO

Julia Moreno, born in Montreal Canada, has lived in the United States for most of her life. At age 9, she began studying classical piano, and a year later, classical flute. She gained a foundation in composition, arrangements, and ensemble performance as a flutist with an orchestra throughout eight years during her childhood.

Friendships with many musicians as well as an immigrant family background instilled in her a great appreciation for ethnic music, jazz, classical, and new experimental music. As an adult she picked up the saxophone as well as the guitar. She has performed with many different bands both in the United States and abroad. While in Spain, she played with a flamenco, jazz, rock band, Carmen, as well as with a jazz quartet, Bomba a Jazz.

In the United States she played with reggae bands, Tree of Life and Upper Dubland. Other groups include, The Humbleman Band, a rock and roll band based in Philadelphia. She recently joined a new concept band consisting of 5 flutes, bass and drums. Several members of the ensemble write all original compositions, based on harmonic and rhythmic diversity. She played in a South American band where she developed an interest in pan pipes, in Spanish, zampona. Her current interest is in Aguafuego, a changing lineup of musicians, which play a mixture of world music with original vocal compositions. Her compositions reflect political and social issues that demand creative storytelling and musical life. Her desire to speak about the mistreatment of all people of color is a common theme in several songs, No me olvides Justicia, Guardians of the Land (dedicated to Leonard Peltier and all indigenous peoples), and I Stand Strong. Her Peruvian and Ecuadorian roots are a source of strength and pride from which she draws from the musical traditions of Andean and Afro-Peruvian sound textures.
