THE DRAFT

It's not a matter of "IF" the draft will return...It's a matter of "WHEN". No one can tell you when that will be. No one can predict the future.

So here are some points to consider if you or anyone you know is twenty years old, give or take a few years:

  • According to the Selective Service the first males to be drafted will be the twenty year olds.

  • Draft registration is still required for males when they reach the age of 18.

  • According to the Selective Service, "When the all-volunteer force was established, it was not intended to stand alone in time of national emergency."

  • According to the Selective Service the President and Congress will authorize the return of the draft when "A crisis occurs which requires more troops than the volunteer military can provide."

  • Anyone keeping up with current events should re-read the last two points. And then ask yourself, what kind of crisis would the President and Congress consider a "national emergency"?

  • The last few "national emergencies" have turned out to be less than genuine.

  • For example; the Viet Nam War turns out to have been a completely unnecessary war. Again, not our words but the words of the man responsible for conducting that war, the late former Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara.

  • The national frenzy of going to war, any war, blinds us to reason or clear thinking. It is one of the dangers of militarism.

  • According to the Selective Service one of the very few exemptions to the draft is conscientious objection.
